Ways to Stay Fit During the Holidays

The holidays can be the most challenging time of year to stay healthy. With added stress and facing more opportunities to skip workouts, it’s hard to maintain a regime.

Develop a plan to deal with stress.

From stretching your budget to buy gifts to handling relatives, the holidays can be an extremely stressful time of year. Try to anticipate sources of stress and figure out how you can best manage them. For example, you may be able to tighten your budget and cut down on your social commitments.

Wipe germs away.

Traveling on a bus, train, airplane, or other forms of public transportation can expose your body to a large number of germs. That’s why you should take the time to use disinfecting wipes on surfaces that are touched by large numbers of people before you. These include armrests, your tray table and latch, air vent, and seatbelt buckle.

Get plenty of rest.

It can be tempting to skimp on sleep in order to get everything done during the holidays, but you could be increasing the chance that you’ll get sick. Sleep helps your body stay healthy and better able to defend against illnesses. Getting eight hours of sleep a night can make you less likely to get sick, so don’t be afraid to cut back on get-togethers if you need to.

Curb your appetite.

Holiday parties and meals offer plenty of food and drink, and it’s easy to overindulge and mindlessly consume calories as you socialize. You can still enjoy some tasty dishes, but start chewing a stick of gum about 15 minutes before you start eating. This can make your brain think you’re eating, so you’re likely to eat less. Popping a mint between servings can also help give your brain a chance to signal your body that it’s full.

Keep exercising.

It may be more challenging to get outside in the cold weather and exercise, but it’s important to stay active over the holidays. Try winter activities such as skiing and ice-skating, which can be fun for a group of family or friends.
